June 7, 2006 -- Covenant House visits Washington D.C.
On May 17th through May 20th, sixteen Covenant House New York young men and women, along with five staff members, traveled to American University in Washington, DC to participate in The Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). The objective of the summit was to educate young adults about the comprehensive human rights of children.
The CRC is a United Nations human rights treaty which sets a standard for universal children's welfare. During this summit, our clients were able to participate in interactive workshops ranging from an introduction and explanation of the CRC, global perspectives on children's rights, how to have the CRC ratified in the United States and what can be done to increase awareness. Executive Director, Bruce J. Henry, traveled to Washington, DC on Friday to have lunch with our young men and women, and to discuss what they had learned so far. Listening to the youth, he was very impressed and inspired by the passion, interest, and knowledge that had been awakened in this young group of clients. Our young men and women proved themselves to be leaders among the close to 200 young people in attendance, as their participation, involvement, and contributions to the discussions were thought provoking and well informed. They were truly inspired to be advocates of the CRC, and become involved in the campaign for its ratification."
